"A harrowing work of string & voice, all by Dave Phillips -- well known for his bestial & sonically brutal compositions, presents Humanity Is The Virus. The feverish & animalistic nature of Phillips' work is on full & total display here. Violin & cello resonate with despair as DP layers his lone voice like an animal choir - screams, guttural growls, whispers, and rhythms inspired by Kecak singing from Bali.
About this material & his compositional process, Dave says "it happens on different realms (where words don't go) and I am often surprised myself what comes out of me." And on these recordings especially I can feel that. At moments it is like pacing outside the cage of a fearful yet angry beast.
Angry because it knows about the evils acted out by its captors.
"Šaman" - "one who knows", a Tungusic word which the word shamanism is thought to be derived from.
These compositions feel heavily shamanic to me, as it feels Phillips' is quite literally contacting other worlds, summoning an altered state of consciousness...
"it's high energy, it's vibration, it's constructive energy..."
Passages of dreadful lament from his stringed instruments overlap to hypnotic effect, and the experience of listening to this release, for me personally, is comparable to the sorrow & anxiety built up by say, one of Scelsi's compositions for voice, yet with DP's signature paresthesia-inducing sound design. Gripping & cathartic the whole way through.
Headphones & focused listening always strongly recommended."
