about

"What’s the Deal?

The Dodge Jones Rage power trio was started in late 2021 as a distributed pandemic-driven experimental-noise-audio collaboration by three long-time grizzled sonic veterans. After sharing some initial recordings with each other, suddenly things started moving quickly, and it was clear that this was destined to be, as they say, A Thing.

Thus far there have been releases from Absurd Exposition, Charnel Music, Phage Tapes, Pressortape, and !Mondo Anthem!. All releases are and will be titled West Coast Power Outage, with increasing Roman numerals to distinguish them. This CD is number VII.

The noises offered by the trio are deconstructed constructions, distorto-rumble making cracks leading to alternate universes of broken-down machinery and curious aliens. Or comparatively calm glacier-like slabs of atmospheric, yet occasionally punishing, layers of ooze. Or confusing, mind-melting caverns of bliss. Or perhaps psychedelic collections of puzzling, rumbling, hissing sounds from inside the multiversal computer as it finally breaks down and comes to a halt. Or something mixing all of those. You never know, and neither do they, so everyone’s even."

The players

Chris Dodge (Louisville, KY) has created noisy hardcore tunes since the mid-80s with bands such as Spazz, Trappist, Infest, Despise You, Marx Bros, Lack Of Interest, To The Point, Stikky, and East West Blast Test; released power electronics under the moniker Jesus Philbin in the early 2000s, but later reverted back to the name his mother gave him; started Bacteria Cult in 2006 and churned out 13 releases; and collaborated with a bevy of noise veterans such as Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, Winters In Osaka, Solmania, Pig Heart Transplant, Anakrid, Joshua Norton Cabal, Electro Static Orchestra, Actuary, and Black Nurse. Launched his own label Slap A Ham Records in 1989, establishing the HC power violence scene, but also working with units like Melvins, Fu Manchu & Burning Witch prior to their now-legendary statuses.

Mason Jones (San Francisco) started releasing experimental cassettes in the 80s, followed by CDs under the name Trance; he founded the Charnel House/Music label and helped introduce the Japanese indie scene to the U.S. and Europe with numerous releases including Mainliner, Fushitsusha, Aube, and Angel’in Heavy Syrup; compiled the groundbreaking 90s Japanese-American Noise Treaty release for Relapse/Release; started and played with psych-noise rockers SubArachnoid Space; and is currently in the bands Collision Stories, Numinous Eye, and Terminal Stress. He’s collaborated with numerous artists including Makoto Kawabata, KK Null, Joe Papa, Jim O’Rourke, Tatsuya Yoshida, Suishou no Fune, and more.

William Rage (Seattle) has worked as or with projects including Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, Nervous Corps, At Jennie Richie, HAPPINESS Forever, Dried Up Corpse, Nihilist Assault Group, The New Blockaders, irr. app. (ext.), Viju Krem (with The Rita), the Germans, Vvbvs, and more. His labels have included Enterruption (with releases by the Melvins, Sun City Girls, Burmese, Larsen, etc), Meaning Corrupted, Readymades Tapes, and !MONDO ANTHEM!.
